Great, We Now Have Poisonous Birds.

I have recently learned that we have been able to reverse engineer the flight of a bird.  This is amazing stuff, I know we are working on the mechanics of the hummingbird, though that might be a tough bird to mimic as a robot, so for now... here is our first oversized robot seagull.  This is truly spectacular, Enjoy.

But, why didn't I know that we had poisonous birds.

Some of the best discoveries in science are completely serendipitous. Dr. Dumbacher discovered, quite by accident, that a common New Guinea bird uses potent poisons for protection -- a defense never before documented in birds. And that's just the beginning of the story... - California Academy of Sciences

The God Particle Explained. What is the Higgs Boson?

What is the Higgs Boson and the mud tracking theory?
It is often described as the hypothetical smallest building block of life.  They seem to have a stickyness to them, there is a mud tracking theory where, if you move a quark through a "puddle of Higgs bosons" it will ENLARGE IN MASS as someone tracking mud. this doesn't seem to work with other "lighter/smoother" particles moving through the same mud field, such as electrons, etc."  See the video below.

Why is it called the "God Particle"?
It seems to come from a book written in the 90's that speaks of an ancient questions, dating back to greek philosophers.  The question of what is the base layer? What is the indivisible particle?  The book has the Douglas Adams-ish title of  "The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?"
The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Didn't we discover the Higgs Boson? And what are we doing to prove this theory?
We have built some giant sci-fi looking machines that might help us to prove the existence of the HB.  Once such place is the CERN lab and their Hadron Collider (reported to cost over $10 Billion) in Switzerland.  Hopefully the particle will not be to normal, as some people expect, we have had a few alarms in the past.  There are also differing opinions that should be considered, such as the fact that some of this may be over hyped - article -

The video below talks about the previously leaked memo re: the discovery of the particle at CERN.

Tevitron at Fermilab, located in Illinois, has also reported an anomaly in their data, that they hope may show the Higgs boson.

Why is this important?  What do we get out of it?
According to Bob D's comments on Science and Mathematics, "The Higg’s boson (or something like it) is an absolutely essential piece of knowledge necessary to complete the Standard Model Of Particle Physics and make complete sense of nature. A completed SMOPP could lead to a TOE or theory of everything (a unification of the four known forces of nature). With a TOE in hand, new insight might be had into the manipulation of matter and energy in ways yet undreamed of; thus, opening up new technologies and equally new pathways to the future."

Here's a TED TALK from a while back if you would like to know more about the Hadron Collider - Enjoy.

Did we just find it?!

7/4/2012 - "AP's take on Incandela's presentation.
One of the two independent teams at the world's biggest atom smasher says it has found strong evidence of a new subatomic particle that looks like the one believed to give all matter in the universe size and shape.
Joe Incandela, leader of one of the teams, told scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research, or CERN, that the data has reached the level of certainty needed for a discovery.
But he has not yet confirmed that the new particle is indeed the tiny and elusive Higgs boson, popularly referred to as the "God particle."

5 Ways to Buy Happiness

Who says you can't buy happiness?

1.  Let's start easy, buy some very nice new clean soft white fluffy towels.  Best when fresh from the dryer.
1888 Mills Luxury Cotton Made in Africa Bath Towel, White
2.  Surveys show that a majority of anger often comes from a bad commute.  Yep, stuck in traffic or crowds on the way to work? Then spend a little more $, and find a place closer to work.
Here's a great site to help out - a google maps/craigslist mash up.
Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us)
3.   Find your favorite music, music is a drug.
ITunes Gift Card
4.  Find someone you can love, that loves you back. (spend some money on them, desired results may vary)
24 Hours on Craigslist
5.   If none of that works and you are still unhappy, have scientist stick electrodes in your head.  Yea really, it seems to work.  You have to see this, click in to the 5 minute mark.  Amazing.

Now you can do things that will make FCP work at a super speeds, like 64 bit processing, and the ability to do things like use all 8 of your cores to speed up the work flow, and that's just the beginning.

Other features include.

-Newly designed user interface (see video)

-Background Rendering

-Automatic Face Detection

-Automatic Shot Identification from (Close up, Wide, etc.)

-Easily Handles 4k Clips, for all of you RED ONE Fans.

-Instant color matching between designated camera clips.

-"Did we mention that you don't have to stop editing to render?"

-Available in June for $299.00 (this is not an upgrade price)

If you can't wait until June, here's a few great add ons available now, that you might want to consider for your FCP.

-Automatic syncing of audio to video, even with out a clapper/slate. It's called "Plural Eyes".

-Automatic voice recognition, great for documentary footage.  That's right, it adds the ability to search the dialogue.  it's called "GET".

Glasses Free 3D on the iPad and a controller for Final Cut Pro too?

(scroll down for the iPad editing apps)

A long while back I found a college kid that made a super cheap steady cam, you might have heard of it the $14 steady cam, so I contacted the soon to be famous TED Talk speaker, Jonny Lee and in between classes he built and mailed to me one of these grungy beauties.  It did a surprisingly okay job, though you might want to use the just released (4/11/11) Adobe AE CS5.5 "Warp Stabilizer" feature. (This also helps with the rolling shutter ripple effect issue, if you are DSLR videographer), so if you like this kind of thing, here's a few videos.

Johnny Lee's Ted Talk.

As you can see in the video above, Jonny Lee went on to reverse engineer the Nintendo Wii, and in doing so helped to spread the idea of experimentation with open source head tracking software (shown in the video above), that leads to a 3D type effect where the computer generates an image specific to the single viewer by tracking where his eyes are in relation to the screen.  Now with the new iPad 2, the front facing camera, and face recognition technology, we can achieve a similar effect, I cant wait for the the new apps that will take advantage of this.  Have a look, it's beautiful glasses free 3D.

Just yesterday at NAB, rumors of the new groundbreaking version of Final Cut started to swell, and some of the big ones allude to that of an iPad controller to integrate with Final Cut.  Some people are already using the iPad with Apple's Final Cut Suite "Color", using the iPad as a controller instead of the expensive color timing wheel or ball controllers.

Below is another worth while iPad app that is already available, it can help to give you a cheap mixer with automated flyers for real time mix down, etc.  Check it.

If you want to use your favorite audio music workstation with the iPad, check out this beauty.

Cut Notes allows you to take notes while watching your cut, allowing you to sync your iPad with the timecode.
